DOT Medical Card Marijuana Regulations

Drivers and operators undergoing a Massachusetts DOT physical will be disqualified for the current use of marijuana.

Although recreational and medicinal marijuana use is allowed in the state of Massachusetts, the DOT physical guidelines follow federal regulations (for which even medicinal use is illegal).

Any driver or operator who uses marijuana may still be eligible to receive a DOT medical card in the future if he meets the following requirements:

  1. Ceases usage.

  2. Gets evaluated by a substance abuse professional

  3. Complies with the recommended rehab

  4. Has a negative result on the return-to-duty drug test

Please note that the current use of Schedule I controlled substances, amphetamines, narcotics, methadone, suboxone and any other habit-forming drug are grounds for disqualification.
